City of Hope fetes Billboard, raises $2.5 mil

The City of Hope campaign, honoring Billboard magazine president and publisher Howard Lander, and editor-in-chief Timothy White with "the Spirit of Life" Award, raised more than $2.5 million in support of the City of Hope medical center and research institute. The evening's theme, "One Hit Wonders," featured such performers as Sheryl Crow, Don Henley, Stevie Nicks, Elvis Costello, Tracy Bonham, Deana Carter, Anita Cochran, Shawn Colvin, John Mellencamp, James Taylor, Angelique Kidjo, Deana Carter, Anita Cochran and Anoushka Shankar, performing their favorite "one-hit wonders" from the history of Billboard's Hot 100 Singles chart. The event, held at Barker Hangar at the Santa Monica Airport, was hosted by Bill Murray.

One-Hit Wonders Get Recognition At Benefit

One-hit wonders have always been the scapegoat for the music industry and never get the credit they deserve. Finally, after years their work is getting some respect. On November 4, 1998 the one-hit wonders' songs were performed at a benefit concert for the City Of Hope Cancer Center near Los Angeles. According to Reuters, talented and famous pop stars including Sheryl Crow, John Mellencamp, James Taylor, Stevie Nicks, Elvis Costello and Don Henley performed the songs that audiences and musicians alike love listening to over and over again. Although, the music industry was paying tribute to the one-hit wonders none of them were invited.
